Why Wool Pellets Work

For generations, wool compost was always our families little garden secret. Now the secret is out and people want to know: why does it work so well?  Well, the answer is simple - as the wool slowly breaks down the keratin in the wool releases its nitrogen, and with total nitrogen that can reach up to 10%, wool pellets truly make a potent fertilizer!

The best part of Woolys isn't just the nitrogen boost - Woolys helps build healthy soil organic matter and can retain up to x25 times is weight in water during the hottest part of the season! The nitrogen and moisture benefits last longer than most conventional fertilizer too, with our wool pellets breaking down slowly over the course of the 12+ months, saving you time and money.

1. Holds up to 25× weight in water

Wool pellets act as a natural soil water reservoir, holding and readily releasing moisture to the root zone as plants require it.

2. Slow release abundant nitrogen

Wool contains up to10% nitrogen — the nutrient plants need for healthy green growth and since Woolys breaks down gradually, it feeds plants for up to a full season, unlike most chemical fertilizers.

3. Aerate and loosen the soil

When wool pellets are well incorporated into soil, the pellets gently expand, break down and break apart compacted soil - improving soil biology, air flow, water movement and root development.

4. Repel slugs & pests

Wool fibers, if used as a mulch, create a natural barrier that many garden pests dislike crawling over or eating near.

5. Support sustainable farming

Every bag of Woolys helps us use the full value of our sheep while reducing farm waste and improving your soil health long term.

Why Wooly’s Fits Our Family & Farm Values:

Closed-Loop Agriculture

When we use Woolys fertilizer it substantially improves our soil → soil grows better grass → grass feeds the sheep that perpetually make more wool.

Sustainable & Regenerative

Woolys helps avoid the use of heavy irrigation on our pasturelands in your gardens, allowing us all to conserve a lot more water.

Supporting Healthy Soil

Woolys adds substantial organic matter, holds moisture, and breaks down slowly over time releasing abundant nitrogen. When used as a mulch it smothers weeds and increases water infiltration reducing erosion and runoff.

Supporting Healthy Water

Wool acts as a natural sponge when added to soil and can also help reduce erosion and sediment runoff into our rivers and streams by increasing soil infiltration and organic matter. This improved soil filtration can help promote healthy waterways and thriving fish populations. Wooly's also releases nitrogen at a significantly lower rate compared to conventional fertilizers, which helps minimize nitrate contamination into aquatic ecosystems and aquafers. Embracing wool fertilizer not only benefits the land but also supports a future clean water supply.

Nothing Wasted

Every part of the animal — meat, wool, compost — becomes something valuable. Our goal is simple: use what we have, honor what the land gives us, and make products that help others grow healthy families.
